OS 8.5 Compatibility Comment
I was a beta tester for both WinME and WinXP (and back to Win95 even), and all I can say about those of you with system crashes... they fixed all the bugs that crashed my As it will be much cheaper to get a new OS with the new box, I might do that. What do you recommend -- you seem to be hooked on XP pro?

A calm discussion of eCS vs CPs? (was Re: Warp 4 Fixpacks)
I know I will eventually have to upgrade to an XP-like OS, because new programs or hardware will eventually emerge that require it, but that time is not here now, and I don't see it being an issue for a long time yet. Until then, XP is (to me) a beta OS with no redeeming qualities that favor it over the OS I'm

Windows 2000 conning
I know my company was encountering some difficulties with a beta test of the OS. I expect Office 2007(which I have) has similarities to the Vista interface. I have to admit, it's driving me rather crazy, trying to find familiar pieces of Word or Excel that MS has decided to classify in a new way.

News from RISCOS Ltd 18/05/01
Moving to a new OS has high costs regardless of whether or not "trouble is expected". That's because for any admin worth his salt trouble is *always* And just how many pieces of hardware do you think any enterprise site is going to donate to the beta testing program and run anythintg of any significance on it?

Windows ME support by Creative?
Rhapsody was'nt killed - it was renamed "Mac OS X" and Mac OS Server" officially, and the code name "Rhapsody" was dropped. All Mac OS projects have a code name - from the top of my head, 7.6.1 was called 'Ides of Buster" (I was a beta tester at that time, I still have my "Ides" archives) and the new one, 8.6,

MEPIS Linux Does the Trick in a Business Environment
I've built 4 machines and all are AMD, though I might make me a Pentium machine someday, just to say I did it. Secondly, I am a firm believer that a new OS isn't worth running until it's about 2 years old. In other words I won't pay for the privilege of being a beta tester. Here is what I understand about XP: It is

A beta tester should desire to be helpful to others and want to the test a new OS to make it a great product so that when it is finally released to the public it will work for them. I just wanted to test it out. The funny thing about it is it doesn't ask me for an activation key. Must be a really old beta.

OS/2, Windows, EEP concerns
There's quite a benefit to at least seeing a new OS before it's done, because you're at least a little bit familiar with the changes that have been made. Without paying $1500 for an MSDN subscription, or being a beta tester, there really isn't any way to see the development of the latest and greatest.
